Not the Norm: Why Embracing What Makes You Different Attracts the Perfect Clients

Playing to your strengths takes practice - that’s the theme of this month. It can also be a bit scary as a business. You want to be open to all people, you forget it’s ok to narrow down and be yourself. (That’s when you get more of the clients you want).

My daughter recently got braces and it’s been quite an experience of learning for me (I didn’t have them unlike my siblings and friends). Luckily the clinic she goes to is very friendly, but they don’t appeal to everyone.

Here’s a few ways this orthodontist clinic stands out and is doing things different.

*They don’t play the radio in the background (most of my dental experiences are usually playing the SoftRock or Adult Contemporary Station in the background with lots of commercials) - ugh! This orthodontist office plays alternative/indie rock, stuff I recognize and seek to listen to and guess what NO COMMERCIALS.

*The main orthodontist brings his two dogs in with him everyday and they follow him around. During many visits, they will pop in and say hi and let you pet them. For my family, we like dogs, don’t have any dog allergies, etc so this is seen as a perk for us. I believe the clinic perceives the dogs as an anti-anxiety/calm source. For others that have allergies or fear of dogs, this could be a turn-off or a deal breaker.

Be Different

*The office itself is bright and modern, with skylights and photos on the wall of the dentist’s travels and of the oceans he’s swam in. It has meaning to the people who work there! They aren’t IKEA art or something you would buy online - they stand out

*The administration and staff are friendly and easy to work with. They make it easy for the parents and kids to be comfortable and supportive. We had a braces issue over the weekend and we were able to text them and solve the problem very quickly.

Let me ask you, what are you doing that might seem a little out of the ordinary that you are doing in your business? What’s helping you stand out? It could be big or small, in case some of the small, subtle things really can make a difference? How are you like this orthodontist clinic or how would you like to be?
