The Best Recipe for Your Marketing 🍳
I love to cook and bake. It’s such a fun way to connect with people and enjoy something together. I remember the first time I was compelled to cook. I lived in Munich, Germany, in the student dorms and was craving Mexican food. Just for the record, this was the 1990s and Mexican food was very hard to come by. I think it’s a cuisine that’s still challenging to find in Germany, but it was RARE at that time!
I decided to splurge and bought some taco shells, meat, spices, and salsa ingredients. Cheddar wasn’t a thing so I used gouda, ha! I bought enough ingredients to share and made tacos for my fellow students who lived in the “Studentenheim” with me. Some of them were Germans, some were foreign exchange students like me from different countries like China and Greece.
Most of my fellow students who sat with me had NEVER had tacos before. It was a fun experience to share something that was new to them.
Since then, when I want challenge myself, I’ll research recipes and see if I can find a new dish that can challenge me and create some new flavor combinations. It can feel nervous and being in uncharted territory, I'm not sure what will happen. I have to trust the recipe and my intuition as I create the dish and know that it might be a few attempts to really master the meal I'm making.
Cooking is like marketing, it can take some experimenting to get it right and there’s a lot of variables involved. Recently I was making corn cakes and following a recipe for the second time. There were a few small things I wanted to change such as turning up the temperature to help them cook faster and crisp. The recipe didn’t give much insight into that.
I also tried different pans which also made a big difference in my ability to cook the corn cakes.
The sauce called for 2 cups of blueberries but it was barely enough. I added another cup of raspberries or a complimentary fruit and made the sauce taster richer.
How can you change your marketing and adapt it to you?
Perhaps you tweak the time of day when you send the newsletter. If you send it on Tuesdays in the AM, try sending it on a Friday in the PM
Check and see who is reading your newsletters and see if they are engaging/reading. How often are you sending a newsletter? On a regular basis? Is that getting you the results you anticipated?
Are getting any traction emailing past clients? Try a different communication style such as texting or calling them. Or even better yet, send a letter in the mail.
Hosting a free webinar but aren’t sure what the topic should be? Get on social media and do a poll to find out. Or better yet, reach out to your favorite clients and ask them what they would want to learn.
Attending a lot of networking events? Try slightly changing your elevator pitch and see how people react! I’ve done this a lot over the years and learned a lot as well as asking for feedback from people.
Do you like to cook? How do you tweak your marketing like a recipe? I would love to hear from you.
